Sherif struggled throughout his formative years of schooling.
The reasons for his educational struggles were unclear to him for a long time and only came to light when, in 2018, at the age of 42, he was diagnosed as autistic.
In 2023, a shy Sherif came through the doors of BAES and enrolled on a SEND Independent Living course at Erdington.Although he has achieved several qualifications and has previously held various volunteering roles, Sherif wanted to push himself and take the next step: he wanted to be employed.
During the Independent Living course, on the advice of his Support Worker, he applied for a paid role as a Co-Facilitator for the NHS. He was invited to an interview and instantly impressed the NHS staff – so much in fact that he got the role.
He started the position in August of last year and is doing brilliantly. For two days a week, Sherif advises Doctors, Nurses and other health professionals about living with autism. On the days he is not working, Sherif continues with BAES on the Access to Working in Catering Year 3 course, at our Erdington centre.
Sherif, who struggled through his early life, unclear why, arrived as a shy individual. Now he has secured a paid position, confidently speaking to distinguished professionals.
Sherif is remarkable.
