Finding calmness through words

  • 2 min read

We’re excited to introduce a new course – Creative Writing for Wellbeing.

In this class, our learners get to explore different writing techniques and prose structures. However, the overriding focus is to use writing as a tool for relaxation, reflection, and to find joy.

Learners are currently working on their pieces for inclusion in our Annual Community Learning Exhibition at the Brasshouse Centre. An annual opportunity for our creative learners to showcase their work for staff, learners and the general public to see and enjoy.

One of our learners, Rebecca, shared why she joined the course and her experience so far:

“ I love writing, and I’ve always been creative. This is now the place for me to write, because when I’m not here, I don’t have the time to write.”

Rebecca joins us each week in the heart of the city to write. She’s always used creative arts as a form of documentation, but life often gets in the way. This course has given her the time and space to reconnect with something she loves. Many learners have expressed similar feelings that creativity often comes in waves. There are moments of inspiration and other times when words just won’t come.

Ruthie, the teacher, encourages everyone to embrace these moments:

“Even if you’re only able to write a short poem or a single sentence, it’s still an accomplishment. We have to remember to celebrate the small wins.”

Each learner have joined for their own reasons, some to rediscover a passion, aim to write a book at the end of the course and others to build confidence or find a peaceful space to express themselves. While there’s an element of learning involved, the course is far from intimidating. It’s a welcoming environment that encourages creativity at your own pace.

As another learner put it:

“It’s eye-opening to see what you’re capable of. No matter your age, there are opportunities out there. You need to look for them. This course allows us to relax, freely trying different styles but still guides us toward an end product.”

We can’t wait to see all the creative pieces at this year’s exhibition!
