Scarlet’s story

A reason to learn English

Scarlet enrolled on an English class in September 2025, determined to make a change in her life. Reading and writing had always felt like uphill battles in her life, barriers that prevented her from learning to drive and pursuing her passion for music.

She had grown to accept this was her lot and carried on with life. But everything changed for Scarlet when she realised her ill son needed her more than ever. She wanted to read, understand, and write confidently to help him manage his medical needs. That was when she decided to improve her English.

Keep going

On her course assessment Scarlet was surprised, and a little disheartened, to see that her English scores were lower than she expected. But driven by her love for her son, she enrolled. Returning to learning hasn’t always been easy. There have been moments of frustration and times she has doubted herself. Yet, with the encouragement of her teacher and the support of her classmates, Scarlet has kept going.

“I’ve always wanted to write stories and poems. Now I’ve got the words to finally get my ideas out.”

A new ambition

Now, she feels she has caught up with her peers. With her passion for music still strong, Scarlet – who has been learning the violin for 18 months – is now aiming higher, hoping to start a music course and one day play in an orchestra.

Scarlet has discovered something amazing: she’s fallen in love with English.
