Constancia moved to London with her husband and daughter before later settling in Birmingham, where she has now lived for 24 years.
After many years of work, her doctor advised her to retire and take time to rest. Constancia followed this advice, but after a few months she realised she wanted to return to work and remain actively involved in her community.
She took on a role at an event space, which allowed her to stay socially active, keep her mind engaged, and maintain a strong sense of purpose. While working there, Constancia recognised the important role language plays in feeling confident and integrated.
Two years ago, she enrolled on a BAES ESOL course to improve her English and strengthen her communication skills. Since joining the course, Constancia has made progress she is deeply proud of.
She no longer needs an interpreter and can now communicate directly with her doctor, confidently expressing how she feels without the fear of being misunderstood.
Learning English has given her greater independence and the confidence to advocate for herself.
Constancia now looks forward to continuing her learning journey, further building her confidence, and strengthening the supportive community around her.
