Giving up wasn’t an option

  • 2 min read

Kamel was out of work for two years.

Previously, she had worked in the scrap metal industry before suffering an injury. Unable to see enough future stability, she wanted to change career.

One day, Kamel’s partner said to her,

“Why not bus driving?”

Kamel joined the National Express course at Brasshouse Centre. Although, at the beginning, when she was told a maths assessment was required, Kamel wanted to head back down the Brasshouse escalator…
She didn’t. She stayed and has thrived.

In her time with us, she took the course seriously, working hard every day. Kamel made friends with everyone; she was keen to help others, always bringing happiness. She also became more aware of her own qualities and how to articulate them when applying for work.

As a result of her dedication, Kamel secured a job at National Express. She is enjoying her time there and its challenges. She’d not passed a component of her training after two attempts. Kamel questioned herself and her abilities.

But she persisted; she persisted for the same reason she did when faced with a maths assessment: giving up wasn’t an option. She’d come this far. She wanted her children to see her working, to be proud. She wanted a better life for them. At the third attempt, Kamel passed the component.

Now Kamel is on her way to being a bus driver. Her young son recently said,

“Mummy, when I go to college, I want to be on your bus.”

Kamel has made herself and her family proud.
