Greg was an employment advisor – a job he loved.
His favourite part was delivering sessions where he motivated people into work.
As someone who has suffered through anxiety, depression and alcoholism, the job gave him a purpose. He could focus on helping people.
Then Greg began to lose his sight. He had numerous operations, was signed off work, and then his contract ended. Eventually, the operations stopped. His vision was impaired, but it had at least settled. He was ready to find a purpose again. While considering his options, Greg recalled after one of his sessions when someone said,
“You should be a counsellor!”
He decided he do just that and joined a Level 2 Counselling Skills course.
Each week, Greg – incredibly – travels two hours by bus and train to Erdington. When he arrives, Greg brings positivity. He is the first volunteer for role-plays and to support his peers. He is also open about his struggles, helping to create a safe space for everyone.
Throughout his life Greg has always struggled to complete assignments. But on this course, he completes every task. He is breaking the habit of a lifetime.
Greg is still learning about himself. What he does know, however, is that once he is sits down on the train to Erdington, he is a different person; he knows that when inside the classroom there is no place he feels less anxious. He knows it’s where he is supposed to be.
Greg has shown tremendous courage. Now he is on the path to doing what he loves: helping people.
