Sherry’s story
New beginnings
Sherry’s journey is one of courage, sacrifice and starting again. Born in Guyana, she migrated to the British Virgin Islands at the age of 13, growing up in a close, supportive community.
From the age of sixteen, Sherry worked tirelessly, starting at the very bottom in a fine dining Italian restaurant and working her way up to become a restaurant manager. Later, she spent four years helping to get her family’s stainless-steel fabrication and welding business up and running.
But when her father became seriously ill, she made the selfless decision to step away and care for him full-time.
A fresh start
For years, Sherry put others first as a daughter, mother, partner and provider.
When her daughter was settled on her own path, Sherry made the brave decision to focus on herself and begin a new life in the UK.
Arriving in Birmingham less than a year ago, she faced the challenge of starting over. Living in the Chinese Quarter, she set herself a simple goal – to learn Mandarin to connect with those around her. That step led her to BAES. Through courses at Brasshouse and Aston Centre, Sherry has built confidence, friendships and a passion for supporting others.
“BAES has given me a future without limits.”
Looking ahead
Inspired by her learning journey, she continues to embrace new opportunities with confidence and purpose, demonstrating the life-changing impact of adult education.
Now 49, Sherry is proving it is never too late to begin again.
