Nazik’s story
New beginnings
When Nazik arrived in the UK from Ukraine in February 2023, she brought a strong academic background but limited confidence in English.
Despite studying economics to degree and postgraduate level, she found speaking and understanding English challenging. Undeterred, she began her journey at BAES in February 2024, joining an ESOL conversation class and progressing quickly from Entry 3 to Level 1.
Growing through maths
Determined to build her confidence, Nazik enrolled on a Level 1 maths course in September 2025. Her tutors quickly recognised her ability, and she soon progressed into GCSE maths. For Nazik, maths became more than numbers; it strengthened her English, challenged her problem-solving and gave her the confidence to explain her thinking. Within five months, she was preparing for GCSE Higher Tier.

Growing in confidence
Nazik embraces every challenge, actively contributing in class and confidently explaining solutions at the board. She also supports others as an ESOL Buddy, a role she describes as a proud milestone that has greatly boosted her confidence and self-esteem.
Now planning to volunteer and give back to the community that welcomed her, Nazik is a passionate advocate for learning. As she says, “Math is my favourite thing to relax.”
