Usman was in a serious road traffic accident in 2019, which resulted in life changing injuries.
He has had to re-learn how to do everyday life tasks and adapt to living with his injuries.
In September 2024, he took the brave step of going back to education: to learn again the skills he had lost.
Usman enrolled on a Level 1 English course. He was reserved initially, lacking confidence in his abilities. The injuries meant it was hard to concentrate.
But Usman persisted. He has produced powerful pieces of writing, and, despite the daily pain, he has remained cheerful and caring, always supporting and encouraging other learners, pushing them to believe in themselves.
Usman has gone from being escorted to the centre to taking the bus independently using his crutches. He never misses a class and always submits homework on time.
He really is an inspiration to himself and other learners, and also his Learning Support Assistant, Claire. Each day Usman inspires Claire to find new ways to support him and other learners to achieve their aspirations.
Usman has now discovered the ‘bug’ for learning again. He wants to keep learning and plans to go on to GCSE English next year, before taking on maths.
But most importantly, he wants to keep on recovering, to keep progressing, and making the most out of his life.
