Rebuilding her life: Liliia’s path to UK accountant

  • 2 min read

In 2022, Liliia left her finance career and banking system role in Ukraine due to war, arriving in Birmingham to start a new life.

Liliia decided she needed to improve her knowledge of English accounting terms so she could adapt and thrive in the UK financial sector. She also wanted to broaden her accounts knowledge into bookkeeping and found the perfect way to do this on our Accounts and Bookkeeping programme.

Starting with Level 1 Bookkeeping and a SAGE course, Liliia built essential foundations in UK accounting practices. Despite initially struggling with English and confidence, her lifelong passion for numbers and determination to pursue her accounting dreams drove her forward.

What made the difference was her teacher’s creative approach – quizzes, role plays, and gamified lessons made complex accounting concepts engaging and accessible.

“As a team, we work together and continuously help each other.”

By Level 2, Liliia was actively job hunting. A crucial careers appointment introduced her to Excel training, a skill frequently required in her accounting interviews.

Our flexible learning allowed her to balance studies with work. Her dedication to mastering UK accounting practices paid off. Just before completing Level 3, Liliia secured a position as an Accountant.

Now starting her new role, she reflects:

“I’m a little bit scared, but some people have planned to go to space, so why should I be scared of numbers?”
