Refugee to teacher

  • 2 min read

Before coming to the UK and applying for refugee status, Hassan was a maths teacher.

He wanted to continue teaching maths here but needed a Level 2 qualification in English.

After receiving positive recommendations about BAES, he joined a GCSE English class in 2018.

He is remembered by everyone who shared that journey with him as a learner who fully immersed himself into the course. He always wanted to know more. He loved learning new words and used them enthusiastically in his delightful creative writing.

Always, his focus remained on his family and on the way in which his increasing command of the English language could improve their lives.

Day by day, Hassan’s confidence increased as he developed the skills for a successful teaching career in the UK.
Hassan further developed his speaking skills as a volunteer with BAES, which also enhanced his CV for his next step. After finishing his course, Hassan continued to pursue his academic dreams; he worked as an interpreter, then completed his maths PGCE.

Now we are delighted to hear that he is a fully qualified teacher in a secondary school. He is a shining example of the ambition and resilience which our learners embody, and his success is richly deserved.
Hassan wants people like him to see what is possible:

“I do not have anything more than you have and I achieved my goal. With hard work and belief in yourself, you can do it as well.”
