Haven’t read in a while? Now could be the time to pick up a book…
Reading helps us understand
Reading is unique because we gain access to the thoughts and experiences of others. We better understand family, friends, people from other cultures. We understand the world.
“Reading other perspectives helped me understand how others see things” – Raheemah, BAES English student.
Reading helps us feel understood
We see ourselves in others: similar experiences, aspirations and challenges. We gain greater perspective of our own lives. Perspective doesn’t solve the challenges we face, but it helps to know there are others like us.
“Reading books that speak to your situation can change your mindset” – Rebecca, English student.
Reading helps us escape
We are often guilty of scrolling endlessly on our phones. We have limitless information available at our fingertips. But are we taking it in? Do we remember? Do we feel better? Reading a book provides simplicity. It’s an escape from the information overload of phones and life. While reading, life slows. We learn better, remember more, and feel calmer.

How can you start reading?
Here are our three top tips…
1. What interests you?
We’ve all been told to read particular books – by teachers, friends, others. Although if you don’t enjoy the book others have, you may think reading isn’t for you. But it can be.
Start with your passions. What topics interest you? Which TV show or film have you enjoyed? It may have started as a book, or there may be a book that is similar. There will be a book if you follow your interests.
2. Read with others
Reading is seen as an individual activity, but it’s also social. Reading aloud with children or joining reading groups can be a way to enjoy books. Our GCSE Reading Group has had a powerful impact on learners:
“It is a community. There is an appreciation of different viewpoints and perspectives. It has opened my mind.”
“Before attending the reading group, I didn’t read much. Now I feel the power of reading. It’s all so magical.”
3. Engage with books in a way that suits you
It’s nice to sit with a book for an hour, but it’s not always realistic. If you can’t read for a long period, it’s tempting to not read at all. But even five minutes can be valuable. It could be while having a cup of tea or just before bed. It doesn’t matter if it takes a long time to read the book. What matters is reading at all.
Reading doesn’t even have to start with a physical book. While on the bus or cleaning the house, you can listen to audiobooks. That may encourage you to read a book when you have the time.
So pick up a book, or listen to one. There is no right way to start reading, just a way that works for you.
