Skills for life that will empower you

Gaining qualifications and knowledge in these key subjects will open doors to better opportunities in life, education and work.

Being confident in the use of English and maths will help you to make better decisions and feel more confident in a wide range of everyday situations. When you are looking for work, you will also need to show employers that you have a good level of reading, writing, and maths skills.

Level 2 qualifications or GCSEs in maths and English are now widely required if you wish to access further education or University courses.

Why should you join a Skills for Life course

The good news is that English and maths courses are free for most people.

We have a wide range of part-time classes available from Entry Level through to GCSE, and these run in venues across the city during the day, evenings, and Saturdays in some centres. You can learn face-to-face or in a virtual online classroom, so you can choose whichever method best suits your personal needs and circumstances.

How will I learn on a Skills for Life course?

On our courses, you will learn maths and English skills through exploring everyday life situations. You will see how the skills you are acquiring relate to day-to-day tasks like paying bills and credit cards, writing emails, and finding the best deals while shopping.

You will learn in small groups made up of adults of different ages, taught by an experienced and qualified teacher. In many of our Skills for Life classes, volunteers and support assistants are available to help on an individual basis when needed.

Finding the right course at the right level for you

To help us to place you on the right course, we will ask you to come to one of our centres to take an assessment. We don’t want you to worry about this or it to put you off joining a class. The assessment consists of a conversation with a teacher and an appropriate task. The information we find out means we will then be able to place you in a class.
